“I’m a Japanese-Australian woman who grew up eating this food. These are the recipes passed down from the matriarchs of my family — now plant-based, but still full of umami.

I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Japanese food. These recipes are as true to the traditional homecooking recipes of my grandma and aunties’ as they can get. I’m also very lazy, so I’ve taken many short cuts and made these recipes easy to make.

When I went plant-based in 2018, I realised how few vegan Japanese recipes were out there. The ones in English? Too whitewashed. The ones in Japanese? Not easy to find. So I made this.

– Ayla, creator of Umai

I am so excited to take you on this authentic, plant-based Japanese cooking journey.

Umai is for anyone who wants to eat well without losing flavour or tradition.
